The links between the polisario and terrorism at the heart of a debate in Geneva

A conference-debate was organized on June 22, 2023, at the University of Geneva, by the Swiss think tank "Geopolitical Observatory of Geneva" on the theme of terrorism in the Sahel.

This conference-debate was moderated by a panel of international experts from academia and intelligence.

At the opening of the debate, several participants highlighted the involvement of separatist movements and, particularly, the polisario front in the criminal networks operating in the Sahelo-Saharan region.

A question was thus posed during this symposium on the case of the polisario, whose members "spawn as much with criminal groups that have a hand in the trafficking of human beings and stolen goods as with terrorist cells linked to Al -Qaeda”.

"The disintegration of this movement, financed by Algeria, and formerly armed and agitated by Gaddafi to establish his influence in the region, is today a real subject of concern", affirmed the President of the Geostrategic Observatory of Geneva, Mr. Alain JOURDAN.

In fact, the balance of power which has been tied around the question of the Sahara and which opposes Algiers to Rabat has changed in nature,” he added.

In the same vein, Alain Jourdan underlined that “Algeria, which has been part of its availability to help fight terrorism in the Sahel, cannot be considered a trusted partner. Its support for the polisario appears more than ever as an extremely dangerous destabilization manoeuvre in an already explosive regional context.

Algeria put themselves offside.

We better understand the efforts it is making to keep silent about the involvement of members of the polisario in terrorist projects and trafficking of all kinds”.
