Haouz earthquake: IMF DG welcomes Morocco's response under the leadership of HM the King

The Managing Director of the IMF took the opportunity to send a message of solidarity to Morocco, which was recently hit by an earthquake in the Haouz region, while welcoming the Kingdom's response, under the leadership of the King Mohammed VI to this natural disaster.

Kristalina Georgieva affirmed that the IMF and the World Bank will do their best to help the Kingdom cope with this crisis.

“I served for five years as a humanitarian commissioner and crisis response officer and I have seen time and time again that when a nation unites, it can overcome the most dramatic challenges. And this is what Morocco is doing under the leadership of His Majesty the King,” declared Ms.

“It is very important that in times of crisis, a country comes together” and shows solidarity, added the head of the international financial institution.

She also praised the “generosity of hearts” of all Moroccans who showed a remarkable surge of solidarity to help those affected by the earthquake.

This solidarity says a lot about the generosity of the hearts of the Moroccan people. “I know that when we come (to Marrakech next October for the annual meetings of the IMF and the World Bank), we will be welcomed with the same generosity,” she said.

Kristalina Georgieva has also announced that the IMF would grant Morocco a loan of $1.3 billion in order to strengthen its resilience to climate risks. This decision is part of ongoing efforts to combat the devastating effects of climate change and help countries adapt to this new environmental reality.

The $1.3 billion loan aims to help Morocco mitigate the consequences of climate change on its economy and population. This is long-term financing that will enable the Kingdom to implement measures and projects aimed at strengthening its climate resilience.
