Senegal reiterates unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity

Senegal has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including over the Sahara region. The affirmation was made by Senegal’s Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall, during her visit to Rabat on Monday 27 May.

In a joint statement issued after her meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, Minister Fall emphasized Senegal’s consistent and firm backing of Morocco’s autonomy plan.

She stated that the plan is seen by Senegal as the only credible and realistic solution to the regional Sahara file.

Minister Fall also praised the efforts of the United Nations in facilitating a practical, realistic, and sustainable resolution to the conflict. She particularly stressed the UN’s role as the exclusive framework for such negotiations.

The minister’s statement comes after Senegal expressed their support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan last week.

The country was one of the African Union member states who reaffirmed their position in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces at a regional seminar of the C24 held in Caracas, Venezuela.

During the meeting, Senegal’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Diamane Diome, emphasized that his country considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative to be a “serious and credible” solution to the regional dispute.

He stated that this initiative is consistent with international law, the United Nations Charter, and relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

Diome described the Moroccan initiative as the “best compromise solution” and highlighted the international community’s support for it, as evidenced by the opening of 30 different state representations in Laayoune and Dakhla.

Senegal’s commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity was also demonstrated with the opening of a consulate general in the Moroccan southern city of Dakhla in April 2021.
