Saint Lucia reaffirms support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, Sovereignty over Sahara

In a significant diplomatic move, Saint Lucia has thrown its support behind Morocco's autonomy plan for the Moroccan Sahara, calling it the "only credible, serious, and realistic solution" to the long-standing conflict. This endorsement came during a joint press conference in Rabat on November 8, 2024, following discussions between Saint Lucia's Minister of External Affairs, Alva Romanus Baptiste, and Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.

Saint Lucia's backing of the Moroccan autonomy plan highlights its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. Baptiste emphasized the necessity of resolving the dispute peacefully and commended the efforts of HM King Mohammed VI in rallying international support for the plan. He also pointed out the pivotal role of the United Nations in facilitating a lasting resolution to the conflict.

Saint Lucia has been strengthening its ties with Morocco, particularly through the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The establishment of an OECS Embassy in Rabat in 2018 and a consulate in Dakhla in 2022 have further cemented the relationship. Baptiste noted that these diplomatic missions are essential for enhancing cooperation and fostering exchanges between Morocco and the OECS member states.

This support from Saint Lucia is a testament to the strong friendship between the two nations and their shared vision for resolving conflicts through dialogue and collaboration. The joint statement released by the two ministers reaffirmed their dedication to working together to achieve a peaceful and sustainable solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
