Morocco is investigating the truth of Es-Smara terrorist attacks

The adoption of the Security Council resolution on the Sahara issue comes in a context characterized by serious development, notably the targeting of residential neighborhoods in the town of Es-Smara in the south of Morocco by four explosions, on the night of 28 to 29.10.2023, causing the death of one person and the injury of three others, two of whom were seriously injured in addition to material losses.

On this subject, an investigation was opened by the Laâyoune general prosecutor's office and technical expertise is still looking for the exact nature and origin of these projectiles.

Given that Morocco is a state of law, the Moroccan authorities remain silent and calm and refrain from commenting on this subject before having the final results.

Notwithstanding, several reliable and convincing indicators have been recorded pointing the finger at the polisario which is carrying out violent actions against Moroccan territory since the unilateral violation of the ceasefire. It is the official claim before the UN by the polisario itself of the attack on Es-Smara.

At the same time, the UN adopted a resolution which included the activism of this militia as part of the “fight” while the Es-Smara attacks had targeted neighborhoods housing civilians and not military or strategic establishments.

These attacks, which have occupied the front pages of the international press, constitute a threat to regional peace and security which is a red line for Morocco.

Despite these maneuvers, Morocco is managing these provocations which attempt to put pressure on the Security Council and divert its attention when it was preparing to make its resolution about the Moroccan Sahara.

Indeed, Morocco avoid these traps and provocations. However, its authorities will continue the investigations to determine responsibilities and strictly apply the law.
