Morocco and Belgium: A Diplomatic Journey towards Mutual Progress and Stability

The diplomatic relations between Morocco and Belgium have recently been highlighted through several key developments. Belgium has expressed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara under its sovereignty. This plan is recognized as a “serious and credible” effort and is seen as a good basis for resolving the regional conflict in the Sahara.

This supportive stance was articulated in a joint declaration following the meeting of the Moroccan-Belgian High Joint Partnership Commission. The meeting, held in Rabat on 15 April, was chaired by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and his Belgian counterpart, Alexander De Croo.

Belgium has reiterated its firm support for the UN-led process aimed at reaching a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution” to the Sahara issue. This commitment underscores the importance of international cooperation and dialogue in addressing regional conflicts.

Furthermore, Belgium has lauded Morocco’s New Development Model and advanced regionalization scheme. These initiatives, driven by King Mohammed VI, aim to foster economic growth and societal development in Morocco. In particular, the Atlantic Initiative launched for Sahel countries is seen as a transformative move that will enhance cooperation between the North and the South, as well as between Africa and Europe.

The momentum of bilateral cooperation between Morocco and Belgium has been hailed, paving the way for a strategic win-win partnership. This partnership serves the shared interests of both countries and addresses common challenges. In this context, Morocco is seen as offering Belgian companies a gateway for investment in Africa across various sectors, including energy, agriculture, industry, mining, transportation, housing, infrastructure, and telecommunications.

Moreover, Morocco and Belgium have reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity of Libya. This commitment was expressed in the Joint Declaration adopted by the 3rd meeting of the High Joint Commission. Both countries have reiterated the central role of the United Nations in facilitating an inclusive political process led by Libyans, resulting in the organization of presidential and legislative elections in the North African country.

In conclusion, the recent developments in Moroccan-Belgian relations underscore a shared commitment to peace, stability, and development in the region. The ongoing cooperation and dialogue between the two countries serve as a testament to the strength of their bilateral ties and their shared vision for the future.
