Moroccan Sahara: Lebanon halts polisario’s hostile campaign against Morocco

The Lebanese position came in response to a hostile pro-polisario conference held recently in Beirut.

The Lebanese government has taken action to end the polisario front’s hostile campaign aimed at challenging Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Sahara.

On Sunday 09 June, Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdallah Bou Habib stressed the importance of bilateral ties between Morocco and Lebanon, reaffirming his country’s consistent position in favor of Rabat’s territorial integrity.

The statement comes following a pro-polisario conference held in Beirut recently.

To distance the government’s position from the event, Habib said that Lebanon is keen to emphasize the historical and deeply rooted fraternal ties that unite it with Morocco, reiterating his country’s consistent position and rejection of any attempt to harm Morocco’s security.

The statement followed a phone call with Morocco’s ambassador to Lebanon during which the minister reiterated Lebanon’s condemnation of any position and declaration harming Morocco and threatening its stability and territorial integrity.

He also affirmed Lebanon's interest in boosting cooperation with Morocco in all fields.

The FM remarks come as the polisario is intensifying its hostile campaign targeting Morocco’s sovereignty over its territorial integrity.

The separatist group is challenging Morocco’s diplomatic gains as the country has earned renewed international community support for its Sahara cause.

Many countries have frequently renewed their support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, particularly the Autonomy Plan, as a viable, “credible, and serious political solution” for the Sahara file.

One of the latest countries to reiterate this sentiment and reaffirm its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity was Brazil, during talks between both countries’ foreign ministers in Rabat.
