Moroccan and Spanish authorities dismantle terrorist cell in joint operation

In a remarkable display of international cooperation, Moroccan and Spanish authorities have successfully dismantled a terrorist cell operating in both countries. The coordinated effort, led by Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), affiliated with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), and the General Intelligence Directorate of the Spanish National Police, resulted in the arrest of nine individuals.

The operation, conducted on Friday 22 November, saw three suspects apprehended in Tetouan and Fnideq, while six others were arrested in Madrid, Ibiza, and Sebta. Searches at the suspects' residences led to the seizure of bladed weapons and electronic equipment, which are now undergoing forensic analysis.

Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the suspects had previously been imprisoned in Spain on terrorism-related charges. They were found to be actively promoting Daesh ideology and holding meetings in Sebta and Tetouan to plan and coordinate terrorist activities. Their ultimate goal was to join Daesh's branch in the Sahel region.

The individuals arrested in Tetouan and Fnideq are currently in custody under the supervision of the specialized public prosecutor's office for terrorism and extremism cases. Authorities are investigating their internal and external connections to determine their level of involvement in the cell's planned terrorist activities.

This joint operation underscores the continuous and exceptional security coordination between Moroccan and Spanish security agencies to counter the terrorist threats facing both nations.
