Josep Borrell highlights the Value of EU-Morocco partnership at EU Foreign Affairs Council

In a significant diplomatic move, the European Union’s High Representative, Josep Borrell, announced the collective support of all 27 EU member states for the strategic partnership with Morocco. This declaration was made following the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting held on October 4, 2024, in Luxembourg. Borrell emphasized the immense value and longevity of this partnership, which has spanned over 55 years, and reiterated the EU’s commitment to strengthening and preserving it across all domains, promising positive developments in the future.

This collective declaration in favor of Morocco comes in response to recent pressures from Algeria. Last weekend, Algeria summoned the ambassadors of the 12 countries that had expressed their support for Morocco following the European Court’s rulings. The EU’s unified stance in support of Morocco serves as a firm response to Algeria, highlighting the strong attachment of the EU and its member states to their partnership with Morocco.

Borrell’s statement reflects an alignment with the EU Council, the European Commission, the EU External Action Service, and the member states. It confirms the positive trend initiated by the joint declaration of Ursula von der Leyen and the High Representative on October 4.

The statements from the EU member states send a clear political message in response to Algeria’s pressures and interference in the EU’s internal affairs and its partnership with Morocco. This unanimity demonstrates solid support for Morocco and a collective response to attempts at destabilization.
