Hungary reaffirms support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan in joint statement

In a significant diplomatic move, Hungary has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's efforts to resolve the Sahara issue and endorsed the Autonomy Plan proposed by Morocco in 2007. This declaration was made during a meeting in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Mr Nasser Bourita and his Hungarian counterpart, Mr Péter Szijjártó.

In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting on 27 November 2024, Hungary praised Morocco's Autonomy Plan, describing it as "the most credible basis" for a peaceful and lasting resolution of the Sahara conflict. This endorsement aligns with Hungary's position as the current president of the Council of the European Union, underlining its commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between Morocco and the EU.

The communiqué also highlighted the mutual commitment of both nations to expand their partnership for the mutual benefit of their development. The discussions focused on enhancing economic, cultural, and technological cooperation, reflecting the growing ties between Morocco and Hungary.

"We are committed to supporting Morocco's efforts in resolving the Sahara issue and believe that the Autonomy Plan provides a credible framework for peace and stability," said Mr Péter Szijjártó. "Our partnership with Morocco is crucial for the region's development and for fostering closer EU-Morocco relations."

Mr Nasser Bourita echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of Hungarian support in advancing Morocco's regional initiatives and reinforcing its role as a key player in North African and European affairs.

This meeting marks a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between Morocco and Hungary, showcasing the strength of their diplomatic and strategic relations.
