Exit of Morocco from the FATF gray list: A new historic milestone reached

Morocco, obviously, has just reached a new historic milestone. That of its exit from the enhanced surveillance process, known as the "grey list", decided unanimously by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), during its General Assembly held in Paris from February 20 to 24.

Taken as a result of the positive conclusions contained in the report of the Group's experts, sanctioning the field visit undertaken from January 16 to 18, 2023, this decision undoubtedly reflects the Kingdom's total compliance with all of its commitments and promises in terms of fighting against money laundering and terrorist financing, in accordance with the action plan agreed with the FATF in February 2021.

The decision also crowns the efforts made under the enlightened leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, with a view to preserving the integrity, sustainability and resilience of the Moroccan economic and financial system, in particular through the fight against the various forms of financial crime.

This new victory for the kingdom responds in an unambiguous way to those who are active within the European Parliament (EP) against Morocco and its interests, as well as to all those who refuse to accept that the Morocco is advancing with a firm and determined step in its irreversible march towards progress, transparency and good governance, which distinguishes it in a neighborhood entangled in an archaism of another time.

This new FATF decision thus confirms Morocco's regional and continental leadership position in terms of good financial governance, and positions the kingdom as a model in this area.

This consecration of the kingdom, by an international financial body of reference, comes to bring a scathing answer to the detractors within the EP, those even who try, without success, to stick to Morocco the label of a rogue state.

The distinction of the Kingdom of Morocco by a leading international financial body sounds like a scathing disavowal to detractors and MEPs, who are leading, without success, a campaign of denigration against the country at the international level.

In other way, while Morocco is leaving the FATF gray list, South Africa, supporter of the separatist and terrorist entity, polisario, was placed on this list. It is to mention that FATF has already pointed out, in a report published last October, the weaknesses of the South African system in the fight against dirty money, with twenty of the forty criteria of the organization little or non-compliant.
