Earthquake; The Moroccan King chairs a working session devoted to examining the situation

"HM King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Prince Moulay El Hassan, chaired on the afternoon of Saturday, September 9, 2023 at the Royal Palace in Rabat, a working session devoted to the Review of the situation following the painful earthquake which occurred on Friday 8 September and which caused significant human and material losses in several regions of Morocco.

To this end, the present officials presented before HM the King, the latest developments in the affected prefectures and provinces, particularly in certain localities which were inaccessible during the night and in which the specific situation and the rescue intervention the services could not be carried out until dawn.


During this session, the present officials brought to the Royal Attention the details of the measures which were taken in order to respond quickly to this large-scale natural disaster.


These emergency measures, being the subject of instructions and constant surveillance by HM the King from the first moments following the earthquake, and having experienced the intervention of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), local authorities, law enforcement and civil protection teams, as well as the relevant ministerial departments, focusing mainly on:

  • Strengthen search and rescue resources and teams to speed up rescue and evacuation operations for injured people;

  • Supply of drinking water to disaster areas;

  • The distribution of food kits, tents and blankets for the benefit of the victims;

  • The rapid resumption of public services.

It is recalled in this regard that on the High Instructions of HM King Mohammed VI, the FAR urgently deployed significant human and logistical resources, both air and terrestrial, as well as specialized intervention modules based on search and rescue teams and a medical-surgical field hospital.


In this context, HM the King gave His Highest Instructions to continue the relief actions carried out on the ground as quickly as possible, and with a view to:


– Immediately set up an inter-ministerial commission responsible for deploying as soon as possible an emergency program for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of destroyed housing in the affected areas.

– Caring for people in distress, particularly orphans and vulnerable people.
