Earthquake: Morocco's thoughtful strategy in the face of the offer of international aid

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

Following the earthquake in the Al-Haouz region, the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, chaired a working session with civil and military officials of the institutions concerned during which he expressed "the most sincere thanks of Morocco to the many brotherly and friendly countries which have expressed their solidarity with Moroccan people in this difficult situation, and several of whom have expressed their availability to provide help and assistance in these particular circumstances.

The meeting noted that as part of an approach consistent with international standards in such circumstances, the Moroccan authorities carried out a careful assessment of the specific needs on the ground, aware that uncoordinated aid would be counterproductive. It was therefore decided that “The best help is useful, effective and well-coordinated help”.

On the basis of this assessment, the Moroccan authorities responded favorably, at this stage of the relief and assistance operations to victims of the earthquake, to offers of support from friendly countries for the provision of relief teams and assistance. In this coordinated line of action, the teams sent by these countries are in operational contact with their Moroccan counterparts.

During the session, it was decided that as response operations in response to the damage caused by the earthquake in all affected provinces evolve, the assessment of possible needs could evolve towards further phases which could lead to offers of support from other countries, which would involve requesting and accepting other forms of collaboration.

During the working session chaired by King Mohammed VI, who took only 3 hours to prepare and carry out the Paris-Rabat flight since the earthquake, it was assured that in Morocco: "we must welcome the demonstrations of solidarity and mobilization of different regions of the world, which testifies to the consideration and recognition of these countries with regard to Morocco's commitment and its multiple contributions to human support actions carried out in accordance with the High Guidelines of HM the King."
