In a significant diplomatic boost, Chile and Malta have, on 18 December, publicly reaffirmed their support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara region. This development was highlighted during high-level meetings between their foreign ministers and Moroccan officials.
Alberto Van Klaveren Stork, the Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, made a strong statement during his official visit to Rabat. Standing alongside Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita, Stork praised Morocco's 2007 autonomy initiative as a "credible and realistic" solution for the Sahara dispute. He underscored Chile's commitment to a fair and lasting resolution that respects Morocco's territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, Malta has also solidified its support for Morocco. As they celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations, Malta's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, engaged in a videoconference with Moroccan officials. Borg called the autonomy plan "a solid basis for a definitive solution" to the conflict and encouraged all parties to renew their commitment to the UN's efforts with a spirit of realism and compromise. As a member of the UN Security Council, Malta’s endorsement carries significant weight, reinforcing the global backing for Morocco's stance.
These endorsements from Chile and Malta contribute to the growing international momentum supporting Morocco's autonomy plan. With more than 115 countries backing the initiative, Morocco's diplomatic efforts are increasingly recognized on the world stage.
This wave of international support not only strengthens Morocco's position regarding the Sahara but also highlights Morocco's diplomatic success and the effectiveness of its foreign policy. The shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous future is gaining solid ground, reflecting the global community’s acknowledgment of Morocco’s leadership in regional stability.
