Morocco reacted strongly following the authorization granted by the Swedish authorities to a demonstration leading to the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran in front of a mosque in Stockholm.
In reaction, King Mohammed VI ordered the summoning of the Chargé d'Affaires of the Kingdom of Sweden to Rabat and the recall of the Moroccan ambassador to Stockholm for consultation, and this, on Very High Instructions.
The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed, through this summons, the strongest condemnation of this offense and the rejection of this inadmissible act.
According to the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP), this offensive and irresponsible act disrespects the feelings of more than a billion Muslims, in this sacred time of the great pilgrimage to Mecca and the blessed festival of Eid al-Adha.
The statement from the ministry adds that, whatever the political positions or the differences between the countries, Morocco considers it unacceptable that the faith of Muslims is flouted in this way.
The principles of tolerance and the values of universalism cannot be reduced to accommodating the views of some, while showing so little regard for the beliefs of over a billion Muslims.
